The Darjeeling Limited

To further my research I've dissected some of Wes Anderson's films down into the aspects that I am taking inspiration from: categories of colour, styling and symmetry.

Here are examples of the colour ways in Darjeeling Limited: the main colours that leap out at you are blue and yellow:

And here are examples of symmetry:

And here are a few examples of styling - the Louis Vuitton luggage custom made for the film:

And lastly, here are some aesthetic shots I picked from the film, ones that show off Anderson's style:

And for those Anderson fans, it's good noting that a great thing about his films is he uses the same actors in many of his films - here is Pagoda from The Royal Tenenbaums.

The Last Days of Disco

I watched this film a couple of months ago and it just started a huge wave of inspiration. The feel of the film, the styling and the story has a luxury about it, and it is brilliant. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it!

Carlotta

I think these illustrations are brilliant. They have such character!

Photography meets illustration

The next few posts are research into the way that illustrators combine photography, fashion and illustration; how the illustration and collage overlap or are placed on top of the photographs. Looking at the sizing of the collage is also good - it's all about the way the illustration and photography connect.

Alena Akhmadullina

These are illustrations from designer Akhmadullina who has been presenting ready-to-wear collections since 2001. She describes drawing as "an interweaving of reality and images that you have devised; it is the best fixation of an idea". While these are not examples of collage, the way she has used animal heads and fashion is very creative.

Elisabeth Arkhipoff

These illustrations created for Anna Sui in Vogue 2002, were a mix of the work by Elisabeth Arkhipoff and Laurent Fetis. Arkhipoff uses multimedia drawings, collages, installations and paintings to create her work. She says they have been described as unexpected and twisted, but says her work is sincere and reflects her personality.

Manish Arora

This photograph is from Arora's S/S 07 collection, the hat by Louis Mariette. It's not an illustration but I like the mix of decoration on the face.
